In the Grove

What Really Mattes at Thanksgiving

November 26, 2015 by Kathy Weckwerth

P1040938Today is Thanksgiving.  The sky is dark and has released a beautiful flurry of soft white flakes falling down onto the old brown leaves.

I have set my table with the old brown dishes, and the turkey is resting on the kitchen counter ready to go in the oven.

As I busy myself chopping onions, celery, and carrots, I begin to recite all of the things I’m thankful for …. Farmer Dean, family, the little old church in the grove, my Bible study friends, my radio show, and my wonderful Best Life staff.

The year has brought many changes to us, including a new furnace at the little church,  a new radio show, and many conferences.

Our grandbabies are growing and flourishing, as Jonah (6 year old) started kindergarten.  He came home from school the first week and called his Papa Dean.  “I don’t want to go back!”  he told us.

“Why?”  Papa asked.

“Because I can’t talk, and I don’t know how to read.  There’s really nothing to do there but listen to the teacher.”

We embraced our son-in-law as he went through cancer surgery and came out the other side healing and cancer-free.

We loved deeply, we encouraged as much as we could, and we relished the days.

As we have prayed for the wonderful 40 year old country singer, Joey Feek, who is dying of cancer, we have been reminded of the fact that we don’t control our lives … God does.  And sometimes life doesn’t make sense.

In the big scheme of things, a turkey and stuffing doesn’t matter.  A flurry of snowflakes doesn’t matter.  Whether or not I remembered to set the pickles on the table isn’t important.

[callout]But in the big scheme of things, what truly matters is that we’re alive.  That we’re thankful and grateful.  That we can look next to us and see the loved ones in our lives.  And that we can thank God for His unconditional love. [/callout]

That’s what matters.

Happy Thanksgiving, from my big old green table to yours …

I am thankful.

Thanksgiving Dinner

by Mary Barnard

Thankfulness is an attribute,

A quality of life,

Which can make existence sweeter

And lighten every strife.

To appreciate is golden;

To say so is divine,

And thankfulness should come each day,

Not wait for special time

Thanksgiving day is every day;

November brings it near,

Remembering with grateful hearts

The blessings of all year.

PRAYER:

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for everything that You have given us this past year. For our families, our jobs, our homes, our cars, and your provisions.

Thank you for this wonderful country that we live in.  Thank you for each and every person around this table.

Today, we pray that You will be the focus of our gratitude.  We pray that You will be the center of our actions.  And we ask that You would be honored each and everyday in our homes.

Thank you for Your abundant grace, love, and blessings.

In Jesus Name, Amen.

Living in the Today

October 29, 2015 by Kathy Weckwerth

P1040803I have a slight problem.  Perhaps you have the same one.  I don’t live in today.  I worry about tomorrow and I fret about yesterday.  I don’t live in today.

I guess I realized this dilemma was getting more serious when the chilling winds of November arrived earlier than expected as the last weekend of October had the weatherman predicting snow and the leaves were flipping to and fro, hitting the ground in a frenzy.

Knowing I had Bible study at the little church and because I didn’t want to be cold, I grabbed a long sleeve tshirt, through on a pair of jeans and my warm wooly socks and got ready to leave.  But a penetrating cold seared through to my bones.  I couldn’t shake the chill.

And there it was … on the top shelf of my closet … a beautiful, brand new, expensive, beautiful sweater from the store Chico’s.  Farmer Dean had blessed me with a little spending excursion as I got to pick out a few fun things for my birthday.

But you see I can’t wear that sweater because it’s for the future.  I might need it for a speaking engagement or for some big family celebration.  I might need to wear it for a photo shoot or a friend’s baby’s baptism.  I can’t wear it.  It’s for the future.

The future comes and then I wait for another batch of the future because I can’t wear the sweater.  It’s new.  I might need it.

It doesn’t stop with the clothes, no.  I have my grandmother’s beautiful Johnson Brother’s Friendly Village china.  It’s displayed in a lovely fashion inside a beautiful old cabinet in my family room.  I might need it in the future for a family get-together.   But when the family gets together, I forget, or I think, no … it might get broken.

You see, I’m not living in the today.  I’m living in the future.  And when I look at the past, yep, I wouldn’t mind stepping back in time to be there in my old 1940’s Ford sedan, wearing my hat and gloves and worrying about what’s for dinner.  But I have a tough time using things right now.  What if I need them?

What if the sweater never gets worn?  What if the dishes never get used?  What if that something never happens.

So today I decided to wear the sweater.  Down it came from the highest shelf next to Farmer Dean’s extra jeans and tshirts.  Clip, clip, went the pricetags.  And I slipped it over my head only to exclaim to myself how great it looked and how yummy it felt.

[callout]Tomorrow is always tomorrow.  Yesterday is always yesterday.  But today … well, today we get to live, really live.[/callout]

I’m grabbing my favorite Audrey Hepburn movie, wearing my new sweater, and pouring myself a cup of coffee from Grandma’s coffee pot into Grandma’s beautiful dishes.  After all, she used them every day for years and years!

It’s time for us to stop worrying about saving things for tomorrow.  Tomorrow will be another today … I’m living in the today.  Well, it just fits better.

Waiting for the Monarchs

September 5, 2015 by Kathy Weckwerth

butterfly-1551323The wind is warm and muggy and as I am out in the front yard, I notice my friends coming back to the grove.

Yes, you could think I was referring to the wonderful group of women who will be lining up on Wednesday morning at 8:45 a.m., waiting to get in the door of the little church, set their Bibles and purses down, grab their coffee and their roll and head for the table to begin to study God’s word.

I am very excited about Bible study starting up, however, I’m referring to my friends, the monarch butterflies coming back to my grove.

You see, each and every year, Farmer Dean and I do a little welcome dance as we watch hundreds of butterflies migrating south as the winter months approach, and we are in awe at God’s handiwork.

I remember the first time I realized what was happening was about 7 years ago.  I was outside in the gazebo reading when I looked up to see one lone butterfly out by my window.  I thought it was so beautiful.  I headed inside to let our little dog out to play and he ran directly to the grove, began to spin and bark, and out flew a hundred butterflies.  I’m not exaggerating.  They had quietly, purposefully been posed on our trees and bushes in the grove so that we didn’t see them.  But as our dog barked and scared them, they began to flitter about.  Benny, the dog and I danced around, shouting, squealing in delight, while the butterflies flittered and zipped about, all the while resting once again on their branches in the grove.

Each year since then, has been a dutiful wait as we watch for their return.  But something very sad has happened.  Each year has brought our friends back to visit, but each year there are less and less traveling.

Farmer Dean says the sprays, the change in climate, the change in our lifestyle (the bees are going as well!) are creating limited amounts of lovely monarchs.

Today, I opened the door to see a ton of black moths (not so lovely) which Farmer Dean has explained are here to help control the beetles or something, but I’m looking for my friends.

One is flittering about and I exclaim …. “bring them here for a visit.  We’ll pray for their safety, their ability to create more, and their ability to live.”

[callout]And just for today, I sit back in my chair and watch … anticipating the beauty of the earth.

Thank you, God, for you have truly made a delight in the monarch. [/callout]
